Turku University Hospital (TUH), the main hospital of the Southwest Finland welfare region, ranked the 58th best hospital in the world, offers a wide range of clinical research options. It is located next to UTU medical faculty and has a staff of about 9,500, including 1000 medical doctors. Like UTU, it forms part of Health Campus Turku, and cooperates closely with the University, with many UTU researchers also holding clinical positions at TUH.

Business Turku (Turku Science Park Ltd, TScP) coordinates business development services within the Turku region in Southwest Finland (a cluster of 23,000 companies, 5 universities, the City of Turku and regional municipalities). It will connect SYS-LIFE fellows with its vast range of contacts at regional and European level. The City of Turku as the principal owner of the regional development company also maintains a regional representation office in Brussels. The expertise of Business Turku in providing innovation support (e.g. business start-up programmes) makes them an ideal choice for supporting the intersectoral aspects of the SYS-LIFE programme.

Ghent University is among the world’s top universities, with 11 faculties including Bioscience Engineering, and Medicine & Health Sciences. Ghent University will provide research and training support, primarily through the KERMIT research unit within the Department of Data Analysis and Mathematical Modelling at the Faculty of Bioscience Engineering. This will include most areas of modern data science (e.g. biostatistics and bioinformatics; bioprocess analysis, simulation and optimization), and especially those relating to AI applications (knowledge-based modelling, data mining and machine learning, computer vision, spatiotemporal modelling, optimization).

This partnership will also connect SYS-LIFE with resources at Ghent University and within Belgium and the Flanders region, including MEDVIA, an intersectoral network hub in the fields of medical biotechnology, medical technology, and digital technology.
